Intra-European student mobility and the different meanings of ‘Europe’
28 March 2018
My paper on ISM and the different meanings of Europe is now available in Acta Sociologica. In this paper, I investigate what students actually mean when they refer to ‘Europe’. The presented models reveal four latent dimensions, namely a ‘cultural’, ‘political’, ‘rights’ and ‘experiential’ dimension. Furthermore, the analyses suggest that exchange students are largely a self-selected group, being a priori more likely to identify with Europe and score higher on the four dimensions.

Today I presented a paper at the annual IMISCOE conference in Rotterdam, co-authored by Kim Caarls (NIDI), providing a gender-sensitive analysis of labour market outcomes of international student mobility. Our analysis is based on annual surveys of former higher education students in the Netherlands and suggests student mobility sustains gender inequalities in the labour market rather than correcting or increasing them.

Together with Yvonne Riaño (University of Neuchâtel) and Parvati Raghuram (Open University), I organized two sessions on gendered perspectives on international student mobility at the Annual IMISCOE Conference in Rotterdam. For the first time I completed a side project which is totally unrelated to everything else I did in the past. Nevertheless, it was highly exciting, as it helped to improve my understanding of rheumatoid arthritis, but also how different fields engage with science as well as different ways to handle data. Actually I learned quite a lot from working out this paper together with my wife, Ine Vos, the principal author of the paper (she is the real expert!).
